(Left photo) David and Myrtle Fukumoto pioneered True Indoor Bonsai since 1962, beginning in their newly-wed apartment, then to a suburban houselot, then a move to Kurtistown on the Big Island of Hawaii to form Fuku-Bonsai as Hawaii’s first certified export nursery. The sole proprietorship became a corporation in 1985 to be the catalyst to develop a Fuku-Bonsai Cultural Center. (Right photo-left to right) Senior Plant Manager Michael Imaino joined us in 1983. David and Customer Service and Workshop Manager Edison Yadao who joined us in 1999. Michael and Edison also are the president and vice-president of Mid-Pacific Bonsai Foundation which is the next largest stockholders after the Fukumoto family.

ALOHA!  In 1989  Fuku-Bonsai sprayed defective Benlate and suffered over $30 million of losses and began a major battle for survival! Total net recovery from the 1994 Benlate product liability and the 2007 DuPont fraud settlements totaled less than 10% of our losses after taxes and legal fees.  We got screwed but survived, reinvented the company and now moving to rebuilding and expansion.

In 2014 our computers crashed, we lost our emailing list, and the JOURNAL OF TROPICAL & TRUE INDOOR BONSAI ended after almost two years of monthly issues. We have made progress and will soon publish a monthly email FBnews with the assistance of Constant Contact who will maintain the emailing list.

In the coming months, you’ll begin to see this website evolve,  first with this homepage, and later on a section-by-section evolution. Computer problems were more extensive than we thought .  You’re invited to sign up and we’ll be sending out emails to “clean” our emailing list to avoid sending notices to those not interested. Please make comments and recommendations of how can be the best True Indoor Bonsai™ informational resource and the outstanding Internet source of premium plants and supplies.

I will continue to personally respond to emails on a one-on-one basis with Fuku-Bonsai customers, those growing our True Indoor Bonsai™, and those interested in the new Hawaiianite™. To date,  Hawaiianite has only been extensively tested for bonsai production and only by Fuku-Bonsai. If you are interested in participating in the initial trials, being a retailer or distributor, or want to obtain wholesale prices for your agricultural organization, please review the Hawaiianite Supporter Membership Program at and join us.

Mahalo for your continuing support.  The plants have never looked better and we have begun a 20% OFF MAHALO CUSTOM COLLECTION SALE.  Check it out at

And finally, for a preview of what we are planning for the FBnews, go to

With warm regards and aloha,  ~~~David (

We have no desire to spam or send to those not interested and, therefore, require signing up and providing all information which will go directly to Constant Contact who will manage and remove those who request or those whose emails bounce back.

HAWAIIANITE NEWS will contain information of Hawaiianite applications for major users, retailers, distributors, or agricultural organizations. So far strongest interest have been from orchid/floriculture, container nurseries, medical marijuana, landscapers, and long-term specialty crops. We will assist in creating high-integrity comparative trials and publish the reports.
